Halitosis Diagnosis and Treatments

Basic Diagnosis

The first consultation is very thorough it is considered by the international forums of halitosis a “High  Definition” diagnosis and it includes:

TESTING FOR THE RED COMPLEX, PORPHYROMONAS GINGIVALIS,  TREPONEMA DENTICOLA

BACTEROIDES FORSYTHUS (tannerella) testing for their enzymatic activity, which turns a test strip blue if positive. The test is fast, painless, and helps assess the risk of gum disease.

We measure your breath before and after the bacterium calibration (killing  the correct amount of bacterium eliminates bad breath). The first measurement is to know what bacteria are in excess so we can calibrate exactly what is needed and also contrast it with the microscope findings.

MICROBIOME SCREENING are SWABS testing for :

1. Anaerobic  bacteria gram+ (good bacteria, it sounds GOOD , but it’s not as  it sounds, in this case, more bacteria even if they are “good” more gases (volatile sulfer compounds ) more bad breath.  We are COMPLETELY AGAINST PROBIOTICS AND PREBIOTICS.

This is the reason why so many people are suffering from halitosis .  Good bacteria “DO NOT” kill bad bacteria.  Our immune system does ( white blood cells).

2. Fungus (mycosis)
3. Parasites
4. Larvae

A lot of the times we discover with the microscope reading some species that are very harmful and do not bring halitosis (bad breath) but need to be eliminated for our general health.

Oral DNA SALIVA TEST

It is performed for an extra cost when it is  tested prior to the initial treatment.  When the patient begins the treatment we include this extra bacterium search, we believe in “TEST DON’T GUESS” philosophy , it’s a precaution just in case test, not  necessary and not needed to start with treatment but highly recommended.

If any dangerous bacterium is encountered, antibiotics will be prescribed.

Furthermore, we test for 11  very dangerous bacteria. Many times, very harmful species are detected and plenty of them do not even bring halitosis, but as we do swallow we also swallow bacterium that can cause lesions and diseases in diverse organs.

The names and last names of the bacterium  we search for are:

1. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans
2. Porphyromonas gingivalis ( bana – test also)
3. Tannerella Forsythia ( bana- test also)
4. Treponema Denticola ( bana – test also)
5. Eubacterium nodatum
6. Fusubacterium nucleatum /periodonticum

7. Prevotella intermedia
8. Campylobacter rectus
9. Peptostreptococcus (micromonas) micras
10. Eikenella corrodens
11. Capnocytophaga species gingivalis. Ochracea, sputugena)

No need to have bad breath to get tested, this is PREVENTION and early detection, just like when we have a blood test , the doctor indicates it to know if everything is well, or it’s not.

We also perform GENE TESTS:

Celsus one

Evaluates 8 gene markers associated with increased inflammation, a critical factor in the severity of periodontal disease, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

OraRisk Caries

Screens for 3 types of harmful bacteria known to cause dental cavities.

OraRisk

Identifies all common species of yeast that cause thrush in people with normal or compromised immune system.

OraRisk HPV

Identifies 51 HPV genotypes and establishes increased risk for oral cancer.

(Helicobacter Pylori: we don’t screen for this bacterium but its highly recommended to be screened by the GI via an endoscopy)

What is Halitosis?

The term halitosis comes from Latin—halitus meaning “breath” and -osis meaning “condition.” More commonly, it’s known as bad breath. While occasional bad breath can result from certain foods or poor oral hygiene, chronic halitosis is often a sign that something is wrong in the body.

In some cases, halitosis can indicate a more serious underlying condition, making early diagnosis essential. A thorough evaluation helps determine whether the cause is oral, systemic, or a combination of factors.

If you’re struggling with persistent bad breath, Florida Halitosis Center at Gables iSmile, Kendall iSmile, Lauderdale iSmile and Miami iSmile can help identify the cause and provide a lasting solution.

The Role of Anaerobic Bacteria

One of the most common causes of halitosis is an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria—microorganisms that thrive in environments without oxygen. These bacteria often live beneath a white coating on the surface of the tongue, which is formed when tartar bonds to the tongue’s surface

Why Does My Tongue Appear White?

Everyone develops some degree of tongue coating daily, just as we naturally produce saliva or urine. However, in people with retentive tongues—where taste buds vary in height—tartar is more likely to bond and remain trapped, allowing bacteria to thrive. These bacteria release volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), which are the foul-smelling gases responsible for bad breath.

At Florida Halitosis Center at Gables iSmile, Kendall iSmile, Lauderdale iSmile and Miami iSmile, we specialize in identifying the exact cause of halitosis, whether it’s due to bacterial imbalance, oral conditions, or systemic health issues, for these reasons we created a customized treatment plan to eliminate the problem at its source.
